Here is How Do College Students Use LinkedIn to Build Their Professional Networks? Insights From Student Surveys
Creating a LinkedIn account is easy. Building professional relationships that lead to internships, mentorship, and career opportunities takes more effort.
A 2025 survey by The New College Perspective, involving 165 college students, found that 94% had a LinkedIn account. However, having a profile did not necessarily mean knowing how to network effectively.
Another College Pulse survey of 2,000 undergraduates found that 73% of LinkedIn users used the platform to search for internships or jobs, and the same percentage used it to build professional networks.
What Actually Works for Students?
1. Connect with relevant people. Follow alumni, recruiters, professors, and professionals working in your target industry. Start with people who share your university or academic background.
2. Personalize connection requests. Instead of sending a blank request, mention a shared course, university, or professional interest. Keep it short and genuine.
3. Make your profile credible. Include academic projects, internships, certifications, technical skills, and measurable achievements. Students can explore the LinkedIn Profile API to understand how professional profile information can be accessed and analyzed for career research.
4. Participate in industry discussions. Comment thoughtfully on professional posts and share relevant project work. Meaningful contributions are more valuable than random connection requests.
5. Ask for advice, not favors. Instead of immediately requesting a referral, ask someone about their career path or skills required in their industry.
Final Thoughts
Professional networking is not about collecting hundreds of connections. It is about building genuine relationships before you need a job. Start early, stay active, and give people a reason to remember you.
